Cambodia and IOM Celebrate Success in Migration Cooperation

PHNOM PENH, July 25, 2024 — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Dr. Sar Sokha, and Ms. Kristin Parco, Head of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Cambodia, recently reviewed the successful outcomes of their ongoing collaboration aimed at improving and protecting migrant rights.

During a meeting held at the Ministry of Interior on July 24, Dr. Sar Sokha lauded the IOM for its pivotal role in fostering robust cooperation between the ministry and the international body. He acknowledged IOM’s crucial support in human resource training and technical assistance, which has significantly enhanced Cambodia’s migration management capabilities.

Dr. Sar Sokha expressed gratitude for IOM's assistance, which contributed to Cambodia’s commendation as a leader in implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) in the Asia-Pacific region. He detailed the ongoing collaboration under the GCM framework, including Cambodia’s role in co-chairing the United Nations Network on Regional Migration.

Furthermore, the Deputy Prime Minister updated Ms. Parco on the Royal Government of Cambodia’s efforts to accelerate public service delivery, bolster local governance, and enhance climate change resilience within the country.

In response, Ms. Parco thanked the Cambodian government for its enduring partnership, noting the country's exemplary practices in migration management which led to its recognition as a model in the region. She appreciated the Ministry of Interior's proactive measures to address migration challenges comprehensively.

The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to deepen their collaboration, looking forward to continued success under the new leadership of IOM in Cambodia.
